Cataracts

My turn for a whinge.... I have a cataract rapidly growing in my right eye. It's a bugger because I have such good vision, 62yo and still don't need glasses. If there was a better rating than 20/20, I'd have it. :happy

The eye doc points at the chart and asks, which is the lowest line you can read. I respond with:

Sigma opthalmics - use at 3 metres.

Joke. Cos I check the chart on the wall when I enter the room, memorise the bottom line ready for the "test of my sight" :satisfied

Seriously, at the moment it's bad, I used to read the charts easily though.

But as it is now, if I see this --> o <-- it looks like this --> 8 <--

So these all look basically the same to me --> o O 0 9 8 6 <--

It's a radial cataract growing from the centre outwards horizontally, right in the centre of my vision, I see vertical doubles and my close up distance sense is crap too. That means if I put pen to paper for example, I either hit the paper to hard or don't reach it with the nib.

No probs, new lens will be fitted on Monday, quick procedure, in and out in a couple of hours.

The lady here had a cataract removal, misi, and they cut a slice in the eye and remove the cataract and slide in a new lens. It's quick and then antibiotic drops etc regularly for several days - and you get your vision back!

I hope it goes well for you Chris - her here lost the sight in that eye before the cataract was replaced (due to shingles infection in the eye) and the operation was to see if it could help, or if it was cactus. It was the latter.

@Megabyte Mum had one too and it worked well.

Chris, do you need to visit the big smoke, or will they do it near Snake Valley?
I like your sense of fun and games with the Ophthalmologist. :satisfied

Yes, my mom has had both eyes done now, and she can see/drive/etc.

After the op, she did ask if she'd be able to play the piano, and the doctor said yes. My mom said "well, I couldn't before!" Hehe

I hope your op goes well, Chris :happy

Rest up for a few days Chris, and you'll be reading this in 20/20 vision again.

This following bit is not rocket science, but the important things I learned from Mums is
  • Don't touch the eye with the tip of the eye-drop bottles - keeping the eye-drop bottles sterile and avoid infection
  • Look up when Mossie draws down on the bottom lid to put the drops in the lower part, not on the eyeball - more comfortable.

Yes, take it easy Chris and relax the eye, coz it's had it's own little trauma.

You can get back to target shooting in a week or two. :wink2:

Is it irritated Chris?

You no doubt have read about the post-operative care and possibilities - here's another set of info.
Ya can't be too careful.
Thanks matey, good link. :happy

Instead of vertical doubles I now have horizontal doubling but only in the 'done' eye. Hopefully it will clear but if not I'll call the clinic on Monday.

It feels like this:

Nah. Not really, not that bad.

The day after and then the day after that. iow, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Great shots eh? You should see it from this side. :satisfied
