Starting early next year, the address bar in Internet Explorer 7 will turn green when surfing to a legitimate Web site--but only in some cases, not all. The colored address bar is designed to be a sign that a specific site can be trusted, giving people the green light to carry out transactions there. It is a weapon in the fight against phishing scams, which use fraudulent Web sites.

Opera:
"Our main concern has been protecting users from phishing attacks. Most of these companies that the current guidelines cover are the victims of phishing attacks," said Michael Smith, part of the standards team at Opera.
Still, Opera is waiting to see how Microsoft fares with the green bar in IE 7 before adding such functionality to its browser, Smith said.

So... if the light is green and you still get phished out of money, Microsoft reimburse you?
It sounds like a bad idea to me, and removes the onus of care from the individual.

Double our police force. Would it mean that no thefts, robberies, etc. would happen after that move?
The possibility of an attack would reduce.
The individual still should take care of himself.

You, I and misi, but this is being marketed to the masses. Microsoft isn't going to cover any losses from people that are fleeced after trusting the 'green light'. It just seems illogical that Microsoft can have a list of servers that will NEVER be prone to a hacking and planting of malware. Even if they update their 'green light' list of servers regularly they can't guarantee that any given server isn't compromised. It's an absurd proposition to me - but I didn't read the announcement so just taking it at face value.

The masses could be protected only one way:
Red light and a disabled connection to that certain site.

It would result in an outcry: We are not able to access certain sites!
Where are we ? In China?
We want to surf the Web freely!

Hmmm... Now what to do???

This email arrived to me just now.

Emails like this, that green light could become handy for a lot of people.
Unfortunately.

About three million have fled their homes. Sudan has always rejected plans to replace the AU force with a larger, stronger UN mission. On Thursday, UN chief Kofi Annan had said a compromise had been reached for a hybrid UN-AU force, to break the deadlock over the Darfur mission. More than 200,000 people have died in three years of conflict in the region.
