The Government has announced it will establish a new company that will invest up to $43 billion over eight years to build and operate a National Broadband Network delivering superfast broadband to Australian homes and workplaces.

To turn its vision into action the Government will immediately:
  • establish a company to build and operate the network and make an initial investment of $4.7 billion in the network
  • commence an implementation study to determine the company's operating arrangements, detailed network design and ways to attract private sector investment
  • fast-track negotiations with the Tasmanian Government, as suggested by the Panel of Experts, to build upon its National Broadband Network proposal to begin the rollout of a FTTP network and next generation wireless services in Tasmania as early as July
  • implement measures to address backhaul 'black spots' through the timely rollout of fibre optic transmission links connecting cities, major regional centres and rural towns - delivering improvements to telecommunication services in the short term
  • progress legislative changes that will govern the national broadband network company and facilitate the rollout of FTTP networks, including requiring use of fibre optic technology in future greenfield developments, and
  • commence a consultative process on necessary changes to the existing telecommunications regulatory regime.
The Government terminated the Request for Proposals (RFP) process on 7 April 2009, on the basis of advice from the independent Panel of Experts that none of the national proposals offered value for money. The Panel noted the rapid deterioration of the global economy had a significant impact on the process. Refer to the extract from the evaluation report for more information.

There was no demand for cable television and Telstra and Optus still could manage to lay it down.
For Internet access there is an extremely huge demand,I hope that they will be able to lay down in the major cities in my lifetime... :happy

Hmmm... Time to get rich or bankrupt? :?
I put my 2 cents that the great plan will succeed.

Reason for my bet?
$900 is on its way to fund my bet.
The government won't give any more gifts to its residents, instead they will spend the next $900 on the great plan to boost our economy.

But value for money is precisely what the plan will not deliver, according to AAPT chief executive Paul Broad.
Mr Broad told Lateline Business that customers were likely to be slugged $200 a month for access to the network.
"If you project yourself 10 years ahead, you have a $43 billion investment. On any sort of reasonable return, say of 10 per cent, you've got to generate $4.3 billion just to make a return on the investment," said Mr Broad, who pulled the company out of the bidding process last year.

$200 ?
Withdrawing my 2 cents... :tearful

Reading again:
The project will now use a variety of technology, including satellite and fixed wireless, to reach Australians, rather than the optical fibre preferred under the Labor scheme.
The broadband technology will be built to nodes – that is the connection point in streets – rather than every house in the nation.
What's that?

The old place up in the hills:

Thank you for checking your address
The NBN rollout has not started in your area.

Whereas here:

The NBN is available in your area.
Contact your preferred phone company or internet service provider to order your services and arrange an appointment.

There are 60 service providers selling services over the NBN in your area.
Contact your preferred phone company or internet service provider to discuss an NBN plan that suits your needs. You can also save this list for later.

Having a look through, my mbps options are: 12/1 or 15/5 - so this is the blinding speed of the NBN that I've been told to expect?

It sound good* so far. At 12/1 I get 50Gb for $50, but for an extra $5 I zoom up to 15/5 or I can top that up to 1000GB for $130. With a result like 9.5/0.8 (best) I can really see a benefit with the NBN* anyhoo, It's like I can afford $130/month on the disability pension to nearly (but not quite) double my current tested speed.

And I know it will be
either a fibre optic cable or fixed wireless connection.

But this is the clincher: Once you have used your included monthly data allowance the speed of your service will be reduced to 512/256 for the duration of the current billing period.

Even our good friends at Tel$tra offer:

Great news, you can get NBN wireless
This means you'll enjoy the fastest speed available in your area.

Hah! cough... fastest speed available in my area. Sadly, not in this state, let alone the country. Thank$ Tel$tra.

So.... I'll......... pass.
