The solar recharge for the batteries don't function too well either.

OK, I tell a fib. Mine isn't the solar-recharge version, I change the 2 AA batteries ~yearly in my older version of that unit. The panel comes with a USB-A to USB-A cable, which is scarily kept separate from all other USB cables here.

The 'shaded' temp unit is an ALDI product, very good for what it does. I have 3 of them, 2 of 1 model and 1 of another. I also have a Clayton's (location) unit which, as described o me, I have never got to function correctly either, but it's a good testing unit.
