Flash-flooding and commuter chaos in Brisbane as storms drench south-east Queensland

Severe storms have dumped heavy rain across south-east Queensland, with flash flooding and power cuts causing peak-hour chaos in Brisbane.

The city has received more rain today than it has in the past three months, with a days-long heatwave breaking as the storms rolled in from the Darling Downs in the early afternoon.

Flooding in and around Brisbane's CBD caused roads to be closed, with some cars caught in rising waters.

There were 25 to 30-minute delays on the bus network, while train services were delayed as well.

A metre of water swamped parts of Kingsford Smith Drive, while cars were stranded by floodwaters at Inala and Bowen Hills.

Police Inspector Sean McKay is urging motorists to slow down in the wet conditions.

"It's causing a bit of havoc on our roads and there is a fair number of roads that are closed," he said.

The heaviest rainfall total was recorded at Moggill in Brisbane's west, which has had more than 135 millimetres since 9.00am AEST.

Brisbane City received about 70mm, while Ipswich, west of the city, recorded more than 101mm and Toowoomba has recorded 76mm.

Wind gusts of up to 113 kilometres per hour have been recorded at Oakey.

The Graceville Railway Station in Brisbane's south-west has been closed due to flooding in the pedestrian subway.

More than 3,000 homes in the south-east lost power, more than half of them in the Ipswich area.

Energex spokesman Danny Donald says most have now been reconnected.

"Out near Ipswich they've restored power to nearly 2,000 customers after weather took out power to areas around Rosewood," he said.

"In Logan we saw around 700 customers lose power after a car slammed into a power pole, so it has been a busy afternoon in inclement weather, but overall crews are doing really well."

The bureau says the storms will ease tonight but the heavy rainfall will continue.

Lucky thing you're on a mountain, no chance of flooded roads. :happy

Yeah you're right Foxi, the only trouble is that we still have to pay extra rises in our insurance policy to pay for those that do get flooded. :tearful

Bloody insurance companies never lose, same as the Banks etc. :furious
