Not as well as years ago, the change from 693 to 1278 decreased its quality.

We listen to Magic out here when we can get it, which sadly ain't too often in the house.

Did you try it with a good antenna?(Provided it's possible to connect to your device)
That's how I get it in the shed, good antenna using a car radio.
Car radios have much better RF amplifiers than your normal run of the mill type, but 'er indoors who wants Magic doesn't want an "ugly car radio, power supply and all that guff" in her kitchen.

It needs to be in a cupboard without any wires in sight.

Ahh, wireless radios! I can only think of a crystal set and I doubt that will work without a good antenna lead into the cupboard from behind, and a huge Yagi on the roof!
