Apple to speed up your iPhone

IT HAS always been rumoured that when Apple releases new versions of its iOS software for iPhone and iPad, it rolls out software that will slow down older devices, forcing them to upgrade and buy a newer device.

New rumours reported by 9to5Mac suggest the company has actually been working on ways to make the next version of iOS work better on older devices.

Devices as old as 2011’s iPhone 4S are said to be supported by Apple’s next big software update, a surprise, as Apple traditonally only supports the last three generations of iPhone with updates.

Historically, Apple developed its software with new features for older devices then stripped several of those features if they didn’t believe the older device could support them.

Apple is now taking a reverse approach by building a version of iOS 9 that runs smoothly and efficiently on older devices before adding new features one-by-one.

Another win for older devices is that a change to how iOS apps are built means that iPhone apps should be much smaller than before, especially handy for those with 8GB or 16GB devices that are filled up.

Due to be revealed next month, 9to5Mac is reporting several new features that their sources have told them are coming. These include using a new system-wide font, like on the Apple Watch, split screen apps on iPads and big upgrades including transit times in Apple Maps.

It's on my iFoney and was chiming in my pocket without the screen being on - I don't use a password to open my screen if that's what they mean.

I have it on 2 ipads which are used as clocks with huge digits - running bigclock2 - and it runs in the background and chimes ok.

I paid the $1.29 or whatever - and it was playing every 1/4 hour plus chiming on each hour - no problemo.

You can limit it to playing just on the hour or any combination of the 1/4 hours, plus limit it to a range of the day. Say 9am to 11pm etc.

I wonder - it's pretty shabby of Apple not to have dates on the comments, as they could be from any period in the past.

I did find it unusual that the westminster chime plays the melody and the chimes themselves are a lower than expected frequency - but meh. There are several other chime you can pick from too.

I just downloaded "Chime Me Big Ben " onto my Android. Sounds great. Need to pay $1.45 to get the silent function eg, when you sleep. Also gives you control over volume and stops it chiming if you are on a call.
Have to stay up a bit longer to see how it sounds on the hour. It does every 1/4 hour chimes.

Nice one. I would try it on my TV except the Kogan TV is a piece of crap that misbehaves when different programs are installed. Any paid program seems to make the TV reboot randomly, and even some non-paid ones.

Android isn't supposed to let the apps do that to the OS!

I do have a spare TV I can try it on though - I'm more and more disenchanted with Kogan support too.

Yes ! You don't even need to be in an Airplane to use it... I use it if I know work is going to call. :shhh:

Unless you mean to throw it away...

I just hit the swipe up and touch the airplane icon.
It turns off my 3G connection but everything using the wireless connection works normally.

Repeat to enable it again. No work fone calls while I am at the pub!

Strange... I thought that it supposed to stop it from any activity with the outside world...

You are right. :thank-you: A touch on the next icon to the right from the airplane icon will enable only the wireless, if you want to use that.
