THE ferocious storm smashing New South Wales which is believed to have claimed three lives, is set to intensify over the coming hours.

Authorities have sent out emergency text messages to residents in the Newcastle region warning them to prepare for flash flooding and heavy rains.

While those in the Dungog area - where three elderly people, two men and a woman were found dead in their homes earlier today - have been told to evacuate.

If I hadn't seen the houses floating down the torrent on TV, I wouldn't have believed it.
