If you haven't heard of USB Type-C, I laid out its details here. To quickly recap, apart from the fact that with Type-C there's no need to worry about which side of the cable to plug in (it works either side up), it also packs the USB 3.1 standard, which comes with a top speed of 10Gbps, twice the current speed of USB 3.0.

And the best part is, after having had hands-on experience with it, I found the new connection standard totally exciting.
For the demo, the group used two Samsung SSD 840 Evo drives together in a RAID 0 setup. Connected to a computer using a Type-C connection, the benchmark test showed a sustained speed of more than 800MBps for both read and write. Prior to USB 3.1, this type of speed was only available with a Thunderbolt connection.

It's a neat configuration - and faster is always good - but they missed the boat with 75 billion USB devices already in existence. :angel

A few years and they will go to the rubbish...
Many will for sure - but like computers have been for some years, they are fast and powerful enough to do the usual things and many people don't need to upgrade.

Ditto with cameras - when it went from 1 to 2 to 3 megapixels you wanted better pictures and upgraded, but if you have a 8 to 12 Megapixel camera there really isn't as much benefit for many point-and-shooters to upgrade, so a lot of gear could hang around for a very long time.

Look how long XP lasted in terms of some PC technology. :wink2:
People have USB 3 hard drives of 1 or 2 or 3 terabytes and many of them could last a long time too.

I'm sure that many bods will embrace the new USB C but there could be loads of older USB stuff for some time...
and I'm cynical enough to think that some other new standard will replace USB C before very long.

Just think of the money to be made from manufacturing/selling USB A/B to USB C adapters and back.

And then some bright spark will create a multi USB port that takes type C and A. I already have drawers with adapters of all types, I could always use a few more.

I think that's the answer. :happy

Re adapters etc - I turfed out several kilos of old cables/adapters/widgets recently, on freecycle.

One bloke replied - and he got the lot plus a load of other stuff that was actually useful and which I no longer needed.
Would have been an expensive AusPost box to SnakeVille though... even if I could kick it that far!
