Speeds?

Riddle me this Batman:

How does nbn™'s new Fixed Wireless speeds compare with everyday online tasks using ADSL?

Twenty-five to 50Mbps download and five to 20Mbps upload speed tier is the top wholesale speed tier currently offered on nbn™ Fixed Wireless. Here are the ways in which the service will streamline online experiences¹ ²:

Task Time taken using the new nbn Fixed Wireless service
1. Downloading a 10 minute lecture from YouTube 12 seconds
2. Downloading a 2 hour podcast 3 mins 12 seconds
3. Downloading a 2 hour HD movie 16 mins
4. Uploading a 2GB document to the cloud 13 mins 20 second

Speed test example:

1. Based on a 10-minute YouTube video – running at 720p – would constitute a file size of around 75MB. [5 mins of YouTube = 37.5MB at 720p]
2. A two-hour podcast with 128Kbps bitrate contains 120MB of data.
3. A two hour HD Netflix movie contains 6GB of data.
Example is based on average Australian ADSL speed of 13Mbps down and 533kbps up.

² Your experience including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn™ network depends on the technology over which services are delivered to your premises and some factors outside our control like your equipment quality, software, broadband plans and how your service provider designs its network.

What download speed do you calculate with the given 25 - 50Mbps and 75MB?

What download speed do you calculate with the given 25 - 50Mbps and 75MB?

Strictly metric:
75MB=75,000KB
75,000*8=600,000Kb
600,000Kb=600,000,000bits

600,000,000bits/1bps=600,000,000secs
600,000,000bits/1Kbps=600,000secs
600,000,000bits/1Mbps=600secs
600,000,000bits/10Mbps=60secs
600,000,000bits/100Mbps=6secs

600,000,000bits/50Mbps=12secs
600,000,000bits/25Mbps=24secs

All about Fixed Wireless nbn™ from Whirlpool.
Linkie hidden in title --> PSYCHOLOGY of the nbn™

A particular problem that is suffered by those who are being relegated the the Fixed Wireless nbn™ network is that unlike Fibre To The Premises or Fibre To The Node, the wireless signal is not assured and in some cases the signal footprint on the map appears to be some arbitrary zone designed to frustrate those who are not within its boundary.

If you are in the process of trying to get a FW connection or if you have had to struggle, argue and jump through hoops to be allowed to book a test you will probably be more than a little excited at the prospect of getting fast broadband – particularly if you have been used to limited speed and flaky connections.

The following are some of the psychological and emotional conditions you might find yourself dealing with. It is not unreasonable to imagine that over the coming years these condition might be added to the official DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders)

FWSTAS (Fixed Wireless Signal Test Anxiety Syndrome) Dreyfus27 on page 27
FWSTAS 'Fixed Wireless Signal Test Anxiety Syndrome' – An anxiety disorder that occurs in the period between booking a FW installation and the actual day of the test. In the period between these two events the victim is left in a state of uncertainty and suffering an unusual fear of rejection. It is more common in those individuals who suffer from obstructions and/or exist on the fringe.
Symptoms include: Desire to undertake large scale deforestation, Standing a staring in the direction of FW towers (usually on the roof), Obsessive Googling of all things nbn™, Erecting tall metal structures in backyards as offerings to the nbn installation gods.

FTTPE (Fibre To The Premises Envy) Dreyfus27 page 29
FTTP people can have 100mbps download and FW folks get limited to 25/5 (maybe soon 50/20)

FOSL (Fear of Signal Loss) see Dreyfus27 page 30
FOSL is the horrible fear that for some reason your hard won FW connection will for some unexplained reason stop working and plunge you back to the dark ages with dial up connection (or worse, no connection at all)

FWAAS (Fixed Wireless Antenna Awareness Syndrome) Dreyfus27 page 30
FWAAS (Fixed Wireless Antenna Awareness Syndrome) Characterised by an acute awareness of wireless antenna installations and a paranoid suspicion that the installation may have been obtained by deception. This would be accompanied by an encyclopaedic knowledge of the boundaries of the coverage map and would probably be aggravated by an existing case of FWSTAS

SCAT (Severe Connection Anxiety Trauma) see Wahroonga Farm page 38
