Wireless issues.... gah!

I spent hours trying to figure why a wireless print server and my desktop wouldn't connect to one of my modem/routers using DHCP or static

I have 2 D-Link's: DVA-G3670B & DSL-2740B C3G

The DVA-G3670B has 802.11b/g wireless while the DSL-2740B has 802.11b/g/n

The 2 clients would take forever to connect to the b/g but never connected to b/g/n maybe because I gave up waiting. But there is a clue in there. :satisfied

After investigating I found the clients were both 802.11b. I figure that everything would try to connect to the fastest protocol first, hence the delays, g first and when that fails, try b. To prove this I locked the DVA-G3670B down to 802.11b and bingo! Fast connect to both clients. While they were connected I set them both for a static address in both the client and router. I then reset the DVA-G3670B back to b/g and on rebooting it, bingo! Fast connect to both. I haven't tested this theory with the DSL-2740B yet, too much hassle and only my laptop has 802.11n anyway.

Okies..., no offence to Okie.... back to my modem issues....

Today, being hot I staed indoors, Mossie is shopping with our lovely lady next door, no not shopping next door, at a nearby (~30k's away) centre, Lucas at Alfredton for the pedants amongst you :poke , anyhoo, I plugged in the DSL-2740B, the b,g,n critter.

Everything connects as expected, the desktop did with it's USB n dongle, but the WGPS606 print server didn't, as usual.

So, I locked the modem down to b mode, everything, EVERYTHING connects, no worries, and fast connection too, not speed, but time to connect was fast.

So, I locked the modem down to g mode, everything, EVERYTHING connects, no worries, and fast.

So, I locked the modem down to b/g mixed mode, everything, EVERYTHING connects, no worries, and fast.

Sooo I set it back to normal, mixed b/g/n mode and everything connects, except the bloody print server.

So, I set it back down to b/g mixed mode, everything, EVERYTHING connects, no worries, and fast, so for now, that's how it will stay.

The Netgear WGPS606 also has mode settings, b, g or b/g. I didn'f tuck with that, I couldn't see any point, same with the modem, I could lock it at g mode, also pointless, so theoretically 54mbps is my limit for file txfer, I'm OK with that in the current technological spectrum.

Did you see what I got away with in there? :police!:

It's worth tucking with - forcing it to g or b might make it play well with the Modem at b/g/n setting.

It's also worth moving the print server, for a test - closer if it's a long way, and further away if it's next to the modem.

Oh, all right. [Bart Simpson] I'll do it this afternoon. [/Bart Simpson]*

Proximity isn't the issue, side by side has been tested, [Max Klinger] far away too.[/Max Klinger]
