A damaging storm has turned "day into night" in Brisbane, as lightning and winds brought down powerlines and left more than 6000 homes and businesses without electricity.
Meanwhile, another severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for other parts of the state.
The Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) was busy cleaning up the Brisbane CBD on Saturday afternoon after wild weather ripped through the city at about 11am (AEST) on Saturday.
In Ipswich, a small grass fire was sparked when lightning struck a crane next to the city's hospital just after 10am but the incoming rain extinguished it, a Department of Community Services (DCS) spokeswoman told AAP.
In Ann Street in the CBD, a hotel roof collapsed under the storm while another 72 calls for assistance were made asking for help with leaking roofs and fallen trees,
"It turned day into night," a SES worker said.
"It came quickly and then it left."
The storm initially left about 11,000 homes and businesses without power in Brisbane, Ipswich and in the Somerset area, a spokeswoman for Energex told AAP.

How did you blokes fare up there?

Thanks for your concern guys.

Luckily we are on the Eastern side of Mount Gravatt which offers us a lot of protection from the storms coming in from the west.
There was a terrific lot of lightening strikes and very loud thunder, which the cat did not like one little bit. Out at Helidon they had 53 mm of rain in 1/2 an hour. :eek
There is a second wave of storms coming through now but not the severity of those couple of dangerous storm cells that came through yesterday.

Sorry, just found this..
Have I got stories to tell.. I was right in the thick of it driving the bus around Bulimba heading to the City.
Anyway, I was driving down Riding Road as the lightning was striking all around me. The strikes were SO BRIGHT considering it was 11am. One Strike will remain in my mind for ever I think. About 500 meters in front of me, one hell of a flash came straight down in front of me as I went along Riding Road. The Bloody thing did the splits just before striking ground ( like a upside down Y ) and struck ground on both sides of the road. An instantaneous almighty bang and everything shook.
As I progressed along Oxford Street ( Haunt of the yuppie caf'e set ) and into Smallman and snaked around to the river. By this time, The rain was pelting down and the wind was near gale force. As I turned at the ferry stop, I was looking right at a block of flats ( 6 pack ) on the corner in front of me. As I watched, the roofing iron began tearing off the balconies and flying across my path. Just managed to avoid all the flying sheets apart from running over a few sheets that landed in front of me. The wind then stopped as I made my way to cross the Story Bridge. Then the wind came up again as I crossed the bridge. As the wide was blowing across the bridge, I had to straddle 2 lanes to have a bit of a safety area either side of me as the wind easily blew the bus up to 2 meters sideways as I kept correcting my course. By the time I reached the City terminus outside McArthur Chambers in Edward Street, All that could be heard was numerous fire alarms going off all over the place and never ending sirens from emergency vehicles.
On my return journey, all the streets around Bulimba were covered in vegetation, eg, leaves, fallen branches, tree limbs..

Was a very exciting morning !!!

There are always passengers !! Some would still be waiting in the middle of a Cyclone if they could, and still complain if the bus was late.

And probably if you drove through water to pick them up they would complain that the seats were wet. :poke

There's no pleasing some people. Glad you survived the storm unscathed. :cool
